Oviedo uses clay to express his deep connection to the earth below him. With indigenous roots, Oviedo brings a contemporary interpretation to ancient native forms, such as seed jars and water ollas. His connection to the land around him allows him to create flowing organic forms that are grounded in a sense of inherent peace. Oviedo formulates his own glazes with inspiration from the textures found in the fluidity of the intertidal zone, and ephemeral desert clouds. The textures he achieves converse with the glacial valleys and high peaks in which he finds solace.
Guided by the stillness found in high elevation, Oviedo draws inspiration from the rugged geometry of crags and shifts of light across ancient walls.
From smooth and rich, to rough and ragged, each ceramic work echoes the complexity found in the enduring natural world in which he emerses himself.
Oviedo’s ceramic work has been exhibited at the American Museum of Ceramic Art and is featured in select galleries and shops throughout California, including Carmel-by-the-Sea and Corona del Mar. His pieces are also part of the curated interiors of Buck Mason stores nationwide, reflecting a refined yet grounded aesthetic.
